2024 Beer Olympics Summary

The Tucson Beer Olympics celebrated its 10th occasion and the reduction to a single day only made every point that much more valuable. The six teams competing had no obvious weak links to exploit and the level of competition was sky high. Austin was back in his traditional Djibouti kit, pairing up with the right guy this time as he and Tevik walked away with the Gold. The podium was full of rookies this year as Utter took an overall Silver in his first year along with his partner Roemer as the country of Jordan. The Bronze went to a pair of rookies from Malaysia, Carnicle and Fritz.

Here is how the weekend looked like from the perspective of each team:

Djibouti (Austin/Tevik) – GOLD – 12 points (2G, 3S)

What Went Right

This team was solid in every event making the finals in 4 of the 5 bracketed events and even sneaking in a silver in Quarters for good measure.

What Went Wrong

Only Bounce Run tripped these guys up, where they won their first match, only to lose the next two and be out.

Jordan (Roemer/Utter) – SILVER – 9 points (2G, 1S, 1B)

What Went Right

Jordan jumped out to an early lead thanks to golds in Flip Cup and Bounce Run and held it through event four with their silver in Snappa.

What Went Wrong

Sloppiness in Beer Pong (0-3) and Quarters (4) left Jordan scoreless in two events that Djibouti scored, ultimately making the difference.

Malaysia (Carnicle/Fritz) – BRONZE – 7 points (1G, 1S, 2B)

What Went Right

What a great showing by these newcomers. They were dominant in Beer Pong and made the final in Bounce Run, typically a struggle for rookies.

What Went Wrong

Flipping was clearly the weak spot for these guys as they combined to go 0-6 in Flip Cup and Beer Run.

Yugoslavia (King/Walton) – 4th – 4 points (1G, 1B)

What Went Right

It was a particularly tough year for all the teams in Quarters but Yugoslavia persevered, tallying 8 makes, good enough for the gold.

What Went Wrong

After winning both Beer Pong and Bounce Run last year, Yugo only managed to get 1 point in those events in a very slow start.

Iceland (LePage/Miller) – 5th – 3 points (1S, 2B)

What Went Right

Iceland capped the two ends of the competition with event medals in the Flip Cup and Beer Run.

What Went Wrong

In the middle, not much to show, as Iceland failed to make the semifinals in any other bracketed event.

Lithuania (Steffes/Winkis) – 6th – 1 point (1B)

What Went Right

Holding off Yugoslavia in the Beer Pong bronze medal match, Lithuania avoided being the last team on the board in the Olympics.

What Went Wrong

They still finished the day at the bottom of the board, with that one point being the only one they would earn. They also finished last in quarters, with only 3 makes.
