Competition & Comradery

The 2007 Summer Games will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, June 30th at Kapiolani Park.

Basically we just want to get everyone together to have fun outside, meet new people, and drink a few beers in the process.

The games are limited to the first 48 contestants who register, however spectators and friends are also welcome.

Teams are comprised at random, and assigned a team country. Both men and women will be distributed equally amongst the teams.

Points will be awarded upon the completion of each event. The team with the highest score at the end of competition will be declared the winner.

History

The IBOC was formed in 1978 to solidify Beer Olympism as a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of beer, body, will and mind.

Blending sport with culture and education, Beer Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for quality barley and hops.

The goal of Beer Olympism is to place beer and sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, while promoting a peaceful, well lubricated society.

Event Listing

The following events have been selected for the 2007 Games:

ACE

Number Of Participants: 6

Object

Volleyball, with a twist. The first team to 15 (win by 2) is declared the winner. Traditional side-out scoring is used.

Rules

The rules are the same as normal volleyball. Each team has three touches to get the ball over the net and inside the opponent’s side of the court.

Traditional side-out scoring will be used. Thus teams may score only while serving. Additionally, the ball cannot touch the net on the serve.

When the ball is "killed" cleanly, without a touch, block, or partial dig, then the opposing team must drink a beer. If a member of the scoring team is able to secure the volleyball, they may continue to serve while the opposing team is drinking.

If a member of the receiving team hides an empty cup in their possession and the opposing team serves the ball, then the serving team must drink one full beer. The serving team can protect themselves by calling out "beer check."

The "Too Good" rule was instituted in the late 80’s by teams west of the Rockies. It states that if a player is not imbibing enough and is playing too well, the referee can award a side-out or point to the opposing team.

BOAT RACE

Number Of Participants: 6

Object

Finish your beer as quickly as possible.

Rules

All team members gather together and form a line. The boat race begins with a non-competitor pounding their beer, and then raising their cup, upside-down, over their head. Once the cup is above their head, the first team member of each team may begin to drink. The person who is next in line cannot begin to drink until the person before them holds their cup upside-down above their head. This continues down the line until all team members have finished their beer.

The team with the fastest time is declared the winner.

CHICKEN FIGHT

Number Of Participants: 1

The team captain will represent their team in this event.

Object

Carry the container outside the ring using only your mouth.

Rules

A ring will be outlined on the ground and contain a cardboard container. Participants enter the ring one at a time. When entering the ring, the player must have both hands behind their back, and only one foot on the ground. Players cannot change feet once they have entered the ring. Players may however, enter and exit the ring at their will.

The player in the ring must bend down, pick up a container with their mouth, and then exit the ring with the container. Doing so will move that player into the next round. Any players who cannot remove the container are eliminated.

Upon completion of a round, the container is trimmed to a lower height, and competition resumes with the remaining players.

Play continues until only one player remains, or no player can successfully remove the container.

All non-competing team members must drink each time their player enters or exits the ring.

FREESTYLE BOCCE

Number Of Participants: 2

Object

Toss your team’s balls closer to the pallina than your opponent’s to earn points. The first team to reach 11 points is the winner.

Rules

Each team will receive 4 balls, with each team member allowed 2 balls. To begin, have one team toss the small ball, or “pallina,” out into the playing field. The individual who tossed the pallina then throws one of their balls, or “boccia,” trying to get it as close as possible to the pallina.

Players from the opposing team then take turns throwing their balls until one of the boccia stops closer to the pallina than the starting player’s ball. If they fail to do so, the starting team tries to outdo its first attempt.

Let the starting players take their second turn if the opposing team gets closer to the pallina than the starting team without using all of their balls.

Continue in this fashion until all eight balls have been thrown. The team with the closest ball gets one point for each of its balls that are closer to the pallina than the other team's closest ball. If a ball is touching the pallina, it is awarded two points.

End the frame after all eight balls have been thrown and appropriate points have been awarded. The scoring team begins the next frame. If no team previously scored, the team that threw the pallina last begins the next frame.

Continue playing frames until one team has reached 11 points.

Within each round, members of the non-scoring team must take the number of drinks scored against them. If a ball is touching the pallina, they must drink double the points against them. All players must have a beer in hand at all times during a match. Violators may be assessed a half-beer penalty.

HORSESHOES

Number Of Participants: 2

Object

Score points for closest shoe (1 point), leaner (2 points), and ringer (3 points). First team to 15 wins.

Rules

Each team throws 2 shoes, alternating between each toss. The team who scored last throws first. In order to score, your shoe must be closer to the stake than your opponent's. Once all four shoes have been thrown, the score is counted.

After each round, the team who lost that round must drink the amount of points scored against them.

Play continues until a team scores 15 points.

MEDLEY RELAY

Number Of Participants: 6

Object

Complete the various events as quickly as possible.

Rules

The Medley Relay will be explained on the day of competition.

PHOTO HUNT

Number Of Participants: 6

Object

Capture photos on the given list within the time allotted. Highest scoring team wins.

Rules

Each team will be given a pack of Polaroid film and the same pre-determined list of photographs. Each item on the list will be assigned a point value. Teams are then given 30 minutes to obtain up to ten photographs from the list.

Failure to return within 45 minutes will result in a 10 point per minute penalty. All members of your team must be present in order to be considered as "returned."

PORTUGUESE HORSESHOES

Number Of Participants: 2

Object

Toss washers as close to the hole as possible to earn points. First team to 21 (win by 2) is the winner.

Rules

Two teams of two are split up with a member of each team on opposite sides of the boxes. The two boxes are placed 10 feet apart.

Each player throws 4 washers alternating every other throw. Once all 8 washers have been thrown the score is tallied. Points may be scored in the following ways: One (1) point is awarded for each washer on the box. Two (2) points are awarded for each washer that crosses the boundary of the hole, leans against the backboard, or rests on top of the backboard. Three (3) points are awarded for each washer that goes into the hole. Washers not on the box at the end of a round are not scored.

If a washer is thrown in the hole and the opponent’s very next throw results in one of their washers going into the hole, then the first throw is canceled and no points are awarded for the first washer.

The team that scored the last point must go first during the next round of throwing. The game is continued until one team reaches 21 points (win by 2).

Within each round of throws, the team who scored less points must drink.

SCORING

The top six teams in each event will score points. The point system is as follows: 1st Place (10 points), 2nd Place (8 points), 3rd Place (6 points), 4th Place (4 points), 5th Place (2 points), and 6th Place (1 point).

POUND-OFF

All event disputes must be settled with a pound-off. If a team is challenged to a pound-off, they must either concede or select a player on their team to face the challenger. The two challengers then face off to see who can pound a beer the fastest. The winner decides the dispute.

If an event is scored as a tie, a pound-off will serve as the tie-breaker.
